Second Look3 Essay from David Alan Harvey’s class

This essay is one that’s all about mood and only mood.

Personal Ad Essay from Look3 Workshops /w David Alan Harvey

Thursday marked the end of the Look3 Workshops and the beginning of the Festival of the Photograph. The workshops ended with our work from the week being the opening for the festival. A pretty neat ordeal to have a packed audience see your images projected in such a stunning venue.
I shot two essays for the week with both being completely different. For the first couple days of the workshop I didn’t shoot much at all except for a few random singles.
Like all creative endeavors it took me awhile to figure out exactly what I wanted to say. It’s great seeing what can happen to one’s mind when you have the pressure of a workshop deadline looming. In many ways it was like my time in grad school - you drain yourself of all creative energy and in your cloudy desperation to generate a powerful, yet simple idea a project finds you and away you go. I believe strongly in the notion that some projects/subjects find you rather than you finding them.
The project combines my two biggest reasons why I love photography; encouraging my child’s curiosity and my love for meeting new people. I can’t thank the awesome subjects here in Charlottesville enough who weren’t creeped out by some stranger coming to their house to photograph them. They helped in making my week a memorable one.
The personal ad essay seemed to be a hit with everyone here and a concept I like a lot. It’s pretty neat to have people like Eugene Richards telling you he loved the series or Harvey telling you he’s going to steal the idea if you don’t continue to work on it. It’s anything but hard-hitting and a nice fit for the type of photography I’m enjoying more and more; a fun and light-hearted topic. It’ll also serve as a nice break from the multimedia project Jenn and I will be working on together this summer that is a much more serious topic.
For the rest of the project I’m only going to seek people out from newspaper personals as the craigslist listings just don’t have the same charm and quaint descriptions that only newsprint provides

Look3 Workshops with David Alan Harvey

Thanks to a scholarship I’m in Charlottesville for the week taking in the workshops at the Festival of the Photograph with David Alan Harvey.
Jenn was fortunate enough herself to receive a scholarship and is in the Eugene Richards workshop so we’re able to share the experience together - a nice bonus.
It’s pretty neat to be able to have lunch with guys like Harvey and Richards and pick their brain. In many ways it’s reassuring to know that even guys at that caliber struggle to finance the projects they love. How or why I find that reassuring I’m not sure? Guess if anything it reassures me that this isn’t about the money, but done out of passion.
It’s been a great couple days so far and I’m hoping I can finalize my essay idea today. So far I’ve only shot random singles around town. The experience has been great thus far and should only get better as the week moves on. I forgot how great workshop environments can be for rejuvenating you.
I’ll post more thoughts and photos later this week when I find the time and energy.

Scholarships for three seats in the Master Classes are available to college photography students. See the announcement by festival director Andrew Owen.
that the LOOK3 Photo Workshops held June 7-12, 2008 in Charlottesville, VA will be accepting submissions for 3 tuition-free slots reserved for students at accredited 2 or 4 year colleges and universities. We are requesting that students submit exactly 10 images of a current or recent photography project they are working on and a short write-up of the project. The three winning nominations will be selected for placement in workshop courses taught by David Alan Harvey, Eugene Richards, and William Albert Allard.
These shooting-intense workshops will be 5-day courses (June 7-12) in which students will craft a body of work from start to finish during the week, receive daily critiques, guidance, and feedback, learn to work under a deadline, process, edit, and sequence their images, and develop and refine their skills as a shooter. In addition, participants will collaborate with other students, have access to Canon equipment, and be able to see their final product projected in the historic Paramount Theater on the last day.
I understand that this is a busy time of year with the semester coming to an end soon. However, this is an excellent opportunity for young photographers to participate in a unique learning experience and I hope you will make an announcement and encourage all of your students to apply. In addition to the workshops, the selected students will receive a complimentary Festival Pass to attend all events for the 3 days of the LOOK3 Festival of the Photograph June 12-14. For additional expenses related to travel and accommodation costs, the LOOK3 workshops will not be able to offer any financial assistance.
