A visual journal by Richard Koci Hernandez
Posted by Tim Gruber | Filed under inspiration
We all loved MultimediaShooter and it’ll be dearly missed, but thankfully Richard has found what he calls his new online distraction. Check out the first piece in his new visual journal.
If you haven’t yet take a look at the rest of his work. It’ll be good for your senses. His On The Road series does the impossible and makes the logistics of traveling seem sexy.
Check this one out from his trip to judge CPOY. Watch for the plane cut out and if you’ve ever witnessed contest judging live you’ll enjoy the “out, out, out” portion of the clip too.
Hopefully he has another in store for us with his trip to the Convergence workshop.
Richard’s work is the Uncola of newspaper video. Very refreshing and something I wish more papers were exploring.

Saul Bass on film intros
Posted by Tim Gruber | Filed under multimedia
Anyone doing multimedia needs to be thinking in this same manner as they approach and edit their stories.
Saul Bass states:
My initial thoughts about what a title can do was to set mood and the prime underlying core of the film’s story, to express the story in some metaphorical way. I saw the title as a way of conditioning the audience, so that when the film actually began, viewers would already have an emotional resonance with it.
What resides emotionally in your multimedia or photos is just as important as the narrative and goes along way in engaging your audience.
In other words make me feel.

MultimediaShooter is no longer being published?
Posted by Tim Gruber | Filed under multimedia
Awoke to find that MultimediaShooter was down this morning and I’m hoping it’s only a bad dream.
My stomach dropped when I read this:
I’m walking away this time with my head held high. It’s been fun. I’m closing the blog doors for good this time. There’s not enough Jack Daniels or Red Bull to get me back this time. Sorry for on again off again nature of the blog lately. Thanks for the support through the hacks. This is a great time for me to step away from the blogosphere.
Good Night and Good Luck, see you in the real world.
Richard thanks again for everything. As I’ve said before you’ve been an incredible asset to the storytelling community and hopefully your voice isn’t lost for good.
Richard’s Multimedia Journal is sitting on my wish list and can be bought here.

The photojournalism resume
Posted by Tim Gruber | Filed under promo
I’ve unofficially labeled my spring one of self promotion. My mom, like any good mother keeps reminding me that I need a job career.
I’m in the process of updating my resume. See my resume here on my about page. I briefly entertained the idea of redesigning it, but lack the creative drive right now to make something fresh of it.
Some resume design inspiration
You might find it useful when it comes time to freshen up your resume for that new job prospect or internship.

The Raw Take - Tim Clayton
Posted by Tim Gruber | Filed under inspiration, photojournalism
There’s a great interview with Tim Clayton of the Sydney Morning Herald at The Raw Take.
Raw Take is a place where people who think and care about photography talk. Deb Pang Davis and Mike Davis produce Raw Take from Portland, Oregon
Tim says a lot of great things:
The fact that we are rubbing shoulders with like-minded, passionate, dedicated people who live, eat, and breath photojournalism, who are all trying to improve and reach the next level just causes a feeding frenzy of knowledge and desire in a positive sense.
That quote reminds me so much of the environment at OU.
We are like most newspapers, run by word people for word people. Generally they want pictures for ten-year-olds and have little or no understanding of photojournalism at the top level.
Sad, but true of the papers here in the States too. There’s very few places that understand and respect the power of visuals.
What has actually happened is many photographers have evolved beyond the wants and needs of the newspaper. We are shooting stories that don’t get published and shooting personal projects to keep our brains stimulated. The ‘cat sat on the mat’ images pay the bills. In many ways it is a sad reflection of photojournalism today, there are so few places where top end photojournalism can be seen.
Jenn and I were actually talking about that the other day and I think it raises a significant point. Will our industry became nothing but grip and grins and to find our voice we have to explore only personal outlets?
A lot of the stuff I shoot is rarely with a paper in mind, which you can credit to my student status, but even as an intern I never felt as if I’m shooting for the paper. Maybe that’s wrong of me? I guess a lot of it is also the environment. The staff in Roanoke last summer was far more visually savvy than any paper I’ve been at. So in turn much of the credit must go there. I guess one of my biggest fears is having a newspaper suck the passion and life right out of me.
Photography is a universal language. You have to read it every day, and speak it every day and learn it every day. Your passion for photography has to flow through your veins, you have to be driven by a V8 turbo inside you.
Date other photographers who are equally passionate, nobody else will understand and your relationship will be doomed!
Thanks Jenn!
Tim says a lot of great stuff. Go check it out along with the other interviews Mike and Deb have done with Vincent J. Musi and John Moore

Critical Mass
Posted by Tim Gruber | Filed under Uncategorized
Been enjoying the 2006 winner galleries on the Critical Mass website. Not all of it is photojournalism or documentary work, but it’s inspiration none the less.
It looks as if they have a page for the 2007 winners, but it contains the 2006 gallery. Hopefully that changes.

A new breed
Posted by Tim Gruber | Filed under Uncategorized
Check out the Verve Photo blog for the work of a new breed of documentary photographers. It’s a nice list that includes some work thats new to me. Geoffrey does a nice write-up of each photographer he profiles. He was kind enough to profile me a few days ago.(Shameless plug, sorry.) Thanks Geoffrey.
Geoffrey Hiller has created Verve to feature photos and interviews by the finest young image makers today. Verve is a reminder of the power of the still image.
While you’re checking out new work see the photo collective Aevum that includes fellow OU photogs Matt Eich and Yoon S. Byun.

Trapped - Mental Illness in America’s Prison
Posted by Tim Gruber | Filed under Uncategorized
My girlfriend, Jenn, posted her stunning magazine project that deals with mental illness in prison.
Jenn’s work is one of the strongest multimedia pieces I’ve seen in recent memory. From the featured project to the raw inmate interviews the pieces will leave you feeling for these men.
Of the project Jenn wrote on her blog:
My intention was to make a multimedia piece that made the viewer feel what I felt when I was there. There were days that I was extremely scared and others that I left thinking how much someone on the outside missed them. Some days, I had to remind myself that many of these men had done heinous things.
Great job Jenn. I’m so proud of you.

Welcome back MultimediaShooter
Posted by Tim Gruber | Filed under Uncategorized
MultimediaShooter is back in business and with new content to show for it. There’s a new podcast of Zach Wise, a former OU alum, who played a huge role in making Soul of Athens what it was and is now doing great things out at the Las Vegas Sun.
Welcome back Koci.

RIP Multimedia Shooter?
Posted by Tim Gruber | Filed under Uncategorized
Came home from a weekend in Minnesota to find that MultimediaShooter had been hacked.
Richard writes:
RIP
I write this with a very heavy heart:
I am sorry to report that this website is down for the count. The site was recently hacked several
times this weekend and severe damage was done. I do not have the time or resources at this time to
continue. I wish you all the best. I only wish this hadn’t happened.
[To the ‘hacker’ I hope it makes you happy to destroy something that people put their
heart and soul into for years, for the sole purpose of learning and creating a small community
on the web. Just to have you destroy it for no reason. You win. There is a special place in hell for you.]
To those of you who supported the site over the years, THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
I don’t know what more to say, except, remember, it’s all about the STORY, not the TOOLS.
-r
I’m hoping Richard finds the strength to bring the site back. His work and site has been an incredible asset in both my storytelling and shear abundance of daily inspiration. It’s been an invaluable resource for me and our community and I hope his voice isn’t lost for good.
Thanks for everything Richard.
Send him an email(rhernandez at mercurynews dot com) and let him know what his site has meant to you.
